Driving industry standards forward: FIA committees in action

Fencing Industry Australia’s commitment to a safer, more skilled, and future-ready workforce continues through the focused efforts of three key groups: the Skills Pathway Initiative Advisory Committee, the Agriculture and Rural Taskforce, and the Gates and Automation Taskforce.

The Advisory Committee plays a strategic leadership role in guiding the national Skills Pathway Initiative, helping to shape a framework that supports long-term workforce development. By working closely with government, training providers, and contractors, the Committee ensures the Initiative is relevant, achievable, and directly aligned with the needs of the fencing and gate sector.

The Agriculture and Rural Taskforce is progressing the next stage of our pilot program by mapping practical job roles to nationally recognised units of competency. This work will inform the creation of targeted Skill Sets that reflect real-world conditions, improve job readiness, and support consistent, quality work in rural and farm projects.

Meanwhile, the Gates and Automation Taskforce continues to lead efforts to improve safety and reduce risks across the industry. Central to this is the development of a new Voluntary Code of Practice, which addresses the urgent need for standards in the design, installation, and maintenance of automated gate systems, an area where the industry has seen a concerning number of preventable injuries and fatalities.

Fencing Industry Australia extends its sincere thanks to the dedicated volunteers who serve on these committees. Their time, expertise, and industry insight are critical to this work and deeply appreciated across the sector. Together, these groups are laying the groundwork for national recognition of fencing and gate qualifications and building a more professional, capable, and respected industry.
