Koala safety fences in Sydney

The NSW Government has commenced new koala-safety fencing works to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions across key transport corridors in western and southern Sydney.

A major component of this initiative is the installation of specialised non-climbable fencing, designed to prevent koalas and other native animals from entering high-risk road areas.

The first stage includes more than 1 kilometre of fencing along Heathcote Road at Deadmans Creek, with additional projects planned for Appin Road and Picton Road.

Key Fencing Features

  • Non-climbable wildlife-exclusion fencing engineered to stop koalas from accessing the roadway.
  • Integrated escape structures, including one-way fauna gates that allow animals to move out of fenced areas safely.
  • Pedestrian access solutions, including koala-proof grids and controlled-entry pedestrian gates.
  • Future extensions along major corridors to provide continuous fencing, improving wildlife protection and motorist safety.

These installations form part of a broader strategy to reduce vehicle-strike incidents during koala breeding season and to support long-term urban wildlife management across NSW.

Fencing Industry Australia welcomes continued investment in fencing-based solutions that enhance road safety outcomes while protecting native fauna.
