National Fencing Skills Pathway Initiative Update

Fencing Industry Australia is progressing the development of a nationally recognised qualification for the fencing and gate sector.

The Agriculture and Rural Fencing Skill Set, developed with SkillsInsight, is now listed on training.gov.au and provides the first formally endorsed training content for the industry.

BuildSkills Australia has approved the Fencing Training Products Project and has lodged the Activity Submission with the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. This will place fencing within the national qualification development framework and begins the process of drafting a full training product that reflects modern industry requirements.

Work is now focused on drafting new competency units, packaging rules, assessment requirements and qualification structure. Once endorsed, the qualification will be submitted for accreditation, and can then be pursued for recognition as an apprenticeship pathway through State and Territory Training Authorities.

FIA continues to support this process through industry consultation, capability mapping, and structured evidence submission, ensuring the qualification accurately reflects both agricultural/rural and construction-based fencing work.

Fencing Industry Australia recognises and appreciates the voluntary efforts of the Skills Pathway Initiative Committee members, whose industry insights and advisory support are instrumental in informing the development of nationally aligned training products for the fencing sector.

Further updates will be provided as development milestones are achieved.
