WNS Contracting was awarded for its exceptional delivery of a complex, multi-stage fencing project as part of a significant Transport for NSW (TfNSW) road realignment at ‘The Rocks’. This long-running contract showcased technical foresight, adaptability, and outstanding stakeholder engagement.
Stage 1 involved dismantling the existing boundary and installing a temporary fence to allow roadworks, culvert installation, and service adjustments. Anticipating future needs, WNS installed permanent strainers based on surveyor markers – preventing re-survey costs, preserving the work zone boundary, and ensuring correct placement for new utilities.
Years later, WNS returned to complete the final boundary fence. During this phase, both landholders requested to retain the temporary fence, effectively creating dual fencing for future tree lanes. However, each had negotiated different permanent fencing specifications with TfNSW – details that had not been communicated through official channels. WNS’s strong relationships with the landholders enabled early identification of this issue and seamless resolution, avoiding delays or rework.
The team also faced logistical and environmental challenges, including persistent waterlogging, obstructions caused by a tree potentially linked to Aboriginal cultural heritage, and access restrictions due to highway safety barriers. WNS addressed these by proposing safe, workable solutions in collaboration with TfNSW’s engineers and safety personnel. Their upfront approach helped foster trust and ensured work continued safely and efficiently.
Key materials and products used in the project included:
- 100NB strainers and 50NB stays for structural integrity
- Cyclone® gates for secure property access
- Waratah® fencing products, including:
- JIO® Star® and MaxY® posts
- 8/90/15 and 105 netting
- 2.0 mm barbed wire
- Ty-Easy® plain wire
The client commended WNS Contracting not only for the high quality and speed of their work but also for their proactive and respectful engagement with landholders, which helped maintain positive community relationships for TfNSW.
This project exemplified technical innovation, long-term thinking, and excellence in rural fencing delivery, which earned WNS Contracting the 2024 Australian FENCING Award for Innovation & Excellence in Rural/Farm Fencing.
